Social Work Month 2017

March is Social Work Month.  Social workers throughout the province will celebrate the theme Social Work: Rooted in Diversity...Cultivating Change. Both the theme and accompanying poster were developed by NLASW's Promotion of the Profession Committee. We extend thanks to Victoria Holmes, RSW, as her artwork provided the backdrop for the poster and helped bring the theme to life.

In celebration of Social Work Month, NLASW President, Glenda Webber, M.S.W., R.S.W., released the following message:

National Social Work Month is being celebrated in Newfoundland and Labrador in March. The theme, Social Work: Rooted in Diversity…Cultivating Change, reflects the diversity of the social work profession in this province and our work to promote cultural competence in practice. Respect for diversity and the pursuit of social justice are fundamental values of the social work profession.

Social work is a vibrant and growing profession. With over 1500 social workers employed in a diverse range of practice settings throughout the province, social workers bring their extensive knowledge and expertise to advance the health and social well-being of individuals, couples, families, groups and communities in this province and beyond.

2017 marks 25 years of social work regulation in Newfoundland and Labrador. Professional regulation ensures the public that they will continue to receive competent and high quality social work services. Registered social workers bring a distinct knowledge base and commitment to the values of respect, integrity, competence and social justice that is inherent in our Code of Ethics.

Throughout the month, social workers will be engaged in many professional development and networking events in all regions of the province to promote and celebrate the social work profession.

As President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Social Workers, I have great pride in our wonderful profession and the leadership, creativity and dedication that is portrayed every day. I encourage all of our members to celebrate and showcase their pride in the social work profession during the month.

Happy Social Work Month!

As noted in the President's message, professional development and networking events will be occurring throughout the month. An event flyer has been forwarded by email to all NLASW members and this information is also available under the event listing section of our website.
